a 65 year old diabetic for the past 30 years periodically visits the Peringit health clinic for assessment of her
condition. She has been on oral hypoglycemic regularly and has been strict
with her diet, where she reduced consumption of sweet food and drinks.
She however developed blurring of vision 5 years back (2001) and was
diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy. Patient was scared initially, thinking
that her condition would lead to blindness and hence disability but was
informed by her doctor that her sight would improve upon treatment, provided
she did not waste any time. She underwent a laser therapy and has
since taken her disease more seriously, where she never fails to attend her
visits to the health clinic as per her appointment. She also goes for regular
eye check-ups.
She developed cataract of the left eye 2 years after her laser therapy and
has undergone surgery (in 2004) for left eye lens removal. She lives with her husband and married son. She claims her diabetes
has never caused her any problems until her retinopathy 5 years back. She
eats well and is cautious about what she eats.
When asked about her condition 5 years back, she said it was a frightening
experience, as she didn't expect her disease to affect her vision. Her husband
and son helped her cope with her feelings by re-assuring her. They took care
of her by carrying out the housework, although this was difficult for her
son who was working (he was not married at the time).
She said there is no family history of the disease. Her mother, however,
developed stroke 15 years ago and passed away following a myocardial
infarction 3 years later.
She is a non-smoker who does not consume alcohol and has no history
of drug addiction/abuse.
On general examination, patient appeared relaxed and there were no
significant findings. Her pulse was 70/min, with a regular rhythm.
No further examination was done on this patient.
